October 2017 Athlete of the Month
October’s Athlete of the Month is Caitlin!
She’s been coming around for a little more than half a year, and she’s been absolutely crushing it! She’s coming in consistently and giving it her all – hallmarks of a textbook CFT athlete of the month. On top of that, she’s a positive presence in class, which makes her very deserving of the title! Let’s hear more:
CFT: Where are you from?
Caitlin: I grew up in the Finger Lakes region of Western NY, but have lived in Boston for the majority of the last 10 years: Brighton, Jamaica Plain, and now Winthrop (yay!)
CFT: How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Caitlin: About 7 months.
CFT: Did you have a fitness background prior to starting CrossFit?
Caitlin: I have always been an athlete. I played every team sport possible growing up, and still to this day I am often involved in softball or basketball leagues. I also used to go to the gym and form my own workout routines, usually some combination of running and weight training.
CFT: What motivated you to try CrossFit?
Caitlin: CrossFit seemed like the perfect balance between all of the ways I liked to work out – it’s like playing a team sport at the gym. As my friends started getting older and busier with other commitments, the team sport scene had started to fizzle out a bit, so I needed something else, and wanted a challenge that I hadn’t faced before. We moved to Winthrop and CrossFit Tradewinds was conveniently located, but more importantly, extremely warm and welcoming, so I decided to give it a shot.
CFT: What are your favorite exercises, movements or WODs?
Caitlin: Call me crazy, but I like the assault bike. I also really like box jumps and pull-ups – those were two of the workouts I was most intimidated by when I started my elements program, and they have grown on me a lot ever since.
CFT: What is your proudest accomplishment since joining CFT?
Caitlin: Being Athlete of the Month, obviously! 😉
CFT: How has CFT helped you in your everyday life?
Caitlin: My mind is more in tune with my body, so I care more about what I put into my body, and how I treat it physically. I also just feel generally stronger, which is really a great feeling when climbing stairs or chasing my little nephews around.
CFT: What do you like to do outside of the gym?
Caitlin: I love going out to see live music. I also love watching sports (Go Bills!) and traveling (next stop, Thailand!).
CFT: What is your favorite song to workout to?
Caitlin: Anything from Jay-Z/Linkin Park “Collision Course” – those songs pump me up. One of these days I want to do a WOD to the whole album.
CFT: Anything else you’d care to share with your fellow athletes?
Caitlin: Joining this gym has really been a special experience for me. It has brought my husband Marcelo and I closer in a really unique way, as we work together to push ourselves and each other. Every time I walk out the door after class, I can be proud of accomplishing something, even if that something is small. I also love the supportive community and the fun people that I get to see in the gym every day. They really make it easy to keep coming back. Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far! I’m so happy I decided to become part of the CFT family.
We’re happy to have you in the fitfam, Caitlin! Congrats!
